Planting Potatos
Well, our first veggies (ok, tubers) are in the ground! Sugar and Spice have been growing some of our seeding potatos… they started sprouting in the warm spot beside the microwave, so we decided to see if we could get them to the small plant stage.
It worked! By both methods, actually, so this weekend we prepared the barrels and planted the potato sprouts. With the help of our neighbor’s donation of some pop bottles, we made cloches for each plant, so hopefully they will be ok in this weird spring weather.
Funny, actually: since we got a pop machine, we just don’t have any plastic bottles anymore! So we had to schlep over to the neighbors for some discards.
I also tilled and toiled and got two of the garden beds ready for planting. The soil has been compacting, and I’m convinced the reason I can’t grow carrots for the life of me, is because of that dratted clay soil. So I worked in peat and manure… and hopefully this looser soil will produce some orange munchers.
Well, along with the daffodils in full bloom in my windowboxes, it’s official! Spring has sprung!
Yellow Belt!
Way to go Sugar! Today she graduated to a yellow belt in Kung Fu.
It’s funny that we managed to find such a great hobby for her – it’s nothing Jrock and I would ever be interested in. But the structure, positivity, and focus is exactly what she needs. Plus (being a chip off the old block) she doesn’t like competition against others, but excels at competition with herself. In Kung Fu there is no sparring with her peers, so the self-improvement focus is perfect for her.
Ski! girls ski!
We spent a Saturday up at Big White, and took the girls skiing for the first time.
Little troupers! They did awesome. It was all smiles no matter how many times the bit the snow, and they both managed to cruise the entire bunny hill at the end, top to bottom, by themselves, and ski right in behind the magic carpet!
Enjoy the pictures form a lovely day!
- Me in my boots, giving the girls some pointers. I sure ran off a few pounds up and down the hill!
- Sugar taking a well deserved break!
- Jrock cruising down the hill with Spice.
- Spice is much more cautious, but she is persistent and actually had more control by the end of the day.
- Sugar the wold one – it was hard to get her to slow down to learn some control.
Galleria
It’s amazing how far Sugar’s drawing has come – she just finished another journal this past week and I photographed some of my favourites!
BTW, one of the best small parenting decisions I did was to skip the colouring books and give the girls journals with blank pages – this kind of creativity would never happen if they were always colouring in someone else’s lines. I remember the preschool teacher was worried, because the girls didn’t “respect the lines” – well! Look at them burn up the paper now!
Spark-tastic!
In December, Sugar and Spice joined a local Sparks group, thanks to an invite from their friend M. These pictures are from their enrollment ceremony when they officially became Sparks!
For those of you that don’t know, Sparks are Kindergarten and Grade 1 aged Girl Guides… they wear pink shirts and promise to “share and be a friend.”
Our family actually has a long long history with Girl guides and Boy Scouts, which I have been careful to keep a secret from their leaders (I really don’t have any time to do more volunteering now!)
I was in Brownies/Guides/Pathfinders/Jr.Leaders for 11 years – yes, count them, 11 years. My sister and brother also spent some time. Both my parents were leaders… the kind that took 10 year old girls winter camping in the snow! The fun kind. But it doesn’t stop there. My dad was a Scout, and his mom was a Scout leader… in fact, my great grandmother was in the first Girl Guide group ever, back in England. It’s just a huge part of our family.
So when the girls were invited along, I was pleased. Of course what the group does and how fun it is depends on the leader, but overall, Guides is a pretty good use of a young girls time. I think there is a lot of value in learning to be comfortable outdoors, and in learning to serve your community.
So far, the girls are doing a lot of colouring and crafts… but in 2 weeks they have their first overnight camp and are pretty excited about it. Hopefully they’ll be spending some more time outside as the weather gets warmer as well.
Here are two pictures of my Sparks helping with supper… and then they get to tell their peeps about it at the meeting! Oh, and a side note that is important to them – the girls love that they are not the only kids with brown skin in Sparks (as opposed to school.) It is actually a real positive for them!
Animal Crazy – Nature and Nurture
Well, my rugrats are back home and back in routine. Aside from being a little tired and very cuddly, they seemed to have fared very well at Gramma and Grandpa’s house!
But on a totally different note: a little insight into what makes Sugar and Spice tick.
If there is one thing my kids are crazy about… it’s animals. The are avid naturalists, and love nothing more than to draw, read, watch or play out animal behaviors. Now, this mostly comes from Jrock and I (the whole nature / nurture thing takes another layer of meaning here.) We both are nature nuts – he is interested in animal behaviors and groups, as well as zoology. I’m more into ecology and interactions, as well as connecting with nature. He really likes mammals – I really like birds and other small beasties. It’s obvious we have passed these passions onto the girls. Jrock’s family were cattle farmers; whereas my family is the outdoorsy side. My dad’s a biologist and we all grew up hunting, fishing and exploring the great outdoors.
The fascinating thing is how the girls’ have got involved in our family interest but made it their own. spice is very creative and dramatic. So she loves playing out big elaborate stories and animal family scenes with her stuffies or small animal figurines. Spice is quite the little artist, and loves drawing pictures of animals and nature. She’s also very happy going for walks to watch ducks, or putter about in nature and the garden. Currently, she is growing some of her own pea plants in my kitchen.
Spice likes to examine bugs and other twigs and things in her microscope, always careful not to harm them. She also likes to call Grandpa on the phone and ask a specific question about something she’s been pondering… like why bighorn sheep’s horns keep growing.
Sugar, our ball of energy, is quite different. She acts out scenes directed by her sister, but her real passion is reading and learning about animals. She memorizes infinite details about different species, their interactions and habitats. Definitely, she’s the academic amateur zoologist, along with the same kind of detachment of many researchers. It doesn’t trouble her much to swish a bug to look at it.
But forget bugs – Sugar is interested mainly in cute animals (puppies) and large flashy species like zebras. Just like her sister, she loves it when Daddy finds her a video online that shows an animal doing something (hunting, reproducing, whatever,) and enjoys not only understanding but being able to explain her findings to other people. If you want to know how climate change works, just ask Sugar. She’ll ‘splain it!
Anyway, here are some of our girl’s favorite animal / nature toys and resources:
Schleich figurines.. boy they LOVE these, especially when they have a family or group of them. Favorites are horses, tigers/lions and the new zebra and giraffes they got for Christmas.

The girls are absolutely gaga for Calico critters – all those infinitely tiny parts and the super cute animals! It’s just so right for their age!
Their matching Falkmanis otter puppets (they also have a skunk and an owl)
Some of their favorite reading books:
And their favorite books overall:
And their favorite tools:

Favorite Netflix movie:

Favorite Netflix TV show (Tales of the Riverbank):
Sugar and Spice’s first brush with “the law”
he he – Probably not something that our girls will remember when they grow up, but over the holidays their dad and I were there for their first brush with the law!
We went skateboarding in my office, which was closed for the holidays. We have this awesome smooth cement floor – perfect! for skateboarding. And there wasn’t anyone else in sight.
But after 1/2 hour or so of boarding and a bunch of awesome action shots, the security guard came in and gave us the boot.
We’ve been there before, and the other security guards never cared. But this one was adamant that there was a “no skateboarding” policy on the property.
As we exited the building, one of our juvenile deliquints looked up at me with wide eyes and said “was that a policeman??”
“Naw, honey,” I replied. “Just security. Police wouldn’t care.”

Kung Fu panda girl!!!
I’m at Kung Fu watching Sugar, who is at rapt attention. She’s watching a VERY muscly woman teaching to say ” stop! Back off!” then punching and kicking a dummy.
I want to sure about the whole martial arts thing… But we needed a high energy activity fir Sugar that she could cal her own. I don’t really like the idea of sparring and competing in tournaments really isn’t her personality. But the when I was at spice’s piano lesson, another piano mom said her twins went to King Fu. And voila! It was perfect.
It’s like speedy Tai Chi. There are no tourneys or sparring until years from now. It focused and she is very attentive. She gets to run around like crazy and has a strong kind female teacher. And there are kids from all walks of life and just as many girls as boys. Perfect!
When they grow up
In case you were wondering what the girls want to be when they grow up…
Spice wants to be an entomologist. Sometimes she wavers and wants to "work with frogs and lizards too", but most of the time she's into bugs.
Up close:
And Sugar?
Well, she wants to be a chef. These are some of her first creations – corn tortillas that she made from Gramma this summer. She always talks about owning her own restaurant, and what she's going to make us when we visit!
Children are pretty amazing, aren’t they? Some people think twins are alike, but even if our girls are identical, they are such their own souls. It’s amazing seeing them flourish and grow… and I wonder what they will be one day.
We gave Spice a bug house for her birthday, to go with her net and magnifying glass. Spice got her first cookbook. Their teacher came over for tea this past week, and they both got to show her their treasures. I think their teacher was pretty amazed how long Sugar could talk about food!!!
Ballet Show Success!
The girls had two ballet shows on Saturday (and what seemed like endless dress rehearsals on Friday.) The evening show, only about 2/3 of the kids were able to stay up that late, but it still was a super cute performance. You can see Sugar with the long ponytail prompting the kids to their next move. The teacher designated her the leader of a few moves, and she took it seriously!
After their performance, they were met by daddy with two long-steemed roses, and we stayed for the rest of the show. The girls were fascinated by the other dance styles; I wish they had more options at this age. Sugar really liked the flamenco, and Spice was gaga over jazz. Maybe Sugar will stay with dance, after all… we’ll see. Spice is determined to go back to dance and wants to take pian too. Sugar, at this point, is planning to do gymnastics and learn to play the guitar. Yikes! I’m going to have to get those music lessons scheduled at the same time…..
Dance Show this Weekend – Summer Camps

The girls’ dancing lessons are almost over for the year… we just have their show still left this upcoming weekend.
Sugar and Spice are thrilled to be dancing in Mouse Costumes… the picture from the costumer fitting above says it all! lol
But I don’t think Sugar will go back into dance next year. They had this very nice but really traditional Eastern-European teacher for the majority of the year, and her traditional style really bored Sugar. Spice was still interested… but Sugar got totally turned off and wanted to quit.
After they got a new teacher two months ago, Spice was right back in there and having the time of her life. Sugar stopped dragging her heals and is now the defacto leader of the dance number, thank goodness – after all, dance is not cheap and we were prepaid for the year. But we had a good discussion the other day and I think she’ll try gymnastics or something else in the fall. Ballet is too pokey for her.
So I signed the girls up each for some summer classes. Sugar is taking Introductory Piano Camp for two weeks, for a couple of hours every day. She’s really intrigued by the instrument, but I don’t think she really knows enough about it for us to invest in lessons. After this camp, I think she’ll be able to make an educated decision.
For my more active Sugar, she’s off to Circus/Yoga/Gymnastics Camp this summer, 9-1 each day for a week. I think it will be just her active pace, and maybe whet her whistle for gymnastics in the fall.
I remember going to Summer Bible Camp at my Gramma’s church and making popsicle stick crosses in the basement. Kinda fun, lol. But topping that <big-time> was the week of horse-riding in the bush with Girl Guides. Now THAT was a summer camp! Activities like that were always so impactful and enjoyable. I hope my girls will have just as much fun. Not the popsicle sticks kind, but the horsey kind.
Do you remember going to summer camp? What kinds of camps did you go to?
