Platelets back up – Maggie should be ok

May. 20th | Posted by 10 comments

Thank goodness – that cancer drug that I drove all over town for seems to have worked. Maggie’s platelets are up again – not normal - but out of the critical zone. So I can stop worrying about her getting a bruise (and bledding to death internally.) She should be ok.

Whewf…..

Maggie’s still going to have to pee ever 1/2 hour for the next 6 weeks, but the worst is past. I just have a few more wrinkles to show for it. Oh, and about $1000 in bills. But I guess it just makes you grateful for public human healthcare, right? And she’s going to be ok, so that’s the most important thing.

    Hi [Nicky],

So happy to hear the news , Yes vet bills sure do give good perspective on heath care costs ( yes I have done my fair share of crazy vet adventures )
All the best as you get to breath again even if there is not much sleep.

Phew! I didn’t want to say this until Maggie was on the upswing, but my dog died of the same condition in 2007 – we (the vet) didn’t figure out what was wrong until it was too late. You are so lucky you acted quickly and got to a good vet. As for the $$, they are worth every penny!

Yes – we WERE lucky we caught it so often. He IS a good vet :-)

Hooray!! So SO good that those numbers are coming up!!! Was it azathioprine or cyclosporin you used? (if you don’t mind satisfying my curiosity!) I agree with your vet FWIW that transfusion is an only if you have to. I found the K9 blood bank when the referral hospitals close to us wouldn’t/couldn’t supply blood to our clinic, we had to find our own donor….

    Go Maggie!!!

So glad your girl is on the mend!

    Nif – vincristine… :-)

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity! :) I haven’t used that one for any immune mediated things – will read up on it! Cheers!!! :D
