In celebration of the world cup, I thought I would post K’naan’s lovely song “Wavin’ Flag.” The girls love it for its beat – I love it for its lyrics. Nona, this is also for you – it can be your favorite modern song – remember listening to it on the way to soccer practice?
First, here is K’naan’s original version. I love it – it’s just beautiful:
And here is his suped-up version for the World Cup. Also very good!
So proud that he is a Somalie-Canadian!
And just because I can, and it’s my blog – here is another version a bunch of Canadian artists made with the original lyrics to raise money for Haiti.

This is my son’s favourite song by far. The original version, that is, despite his love of all things soccer. (The Haiti one has some different lyrics too.) It has actually led to some very deep conversations about politics and geography. (Yes, he’s only 7…)
Our son loves it too! And whenever it plays, he looks at me and proclaims, “It’s Africa, mommy!!” It makes my heart smile….

Have your girls heard the official World Cup song by Shakira “Waka Waka (This time for Africa)? I’m sure they’ll love it… fun music, great beat and great lyrics. Its definitely helped to actually get us going here in the morning in our days upon days of rain

Yes, Andrea – a friend sent me Waka Waka as well… it’sw fun and vibrant – but I definitely like this one more
I’ve been listening to the Young Artists for Haiti version in my car for the last couple months. LOVE it.
K’Naan is one of those great Canadian rappers whose music you can enjoy without feeling bad about the lyrics – no glorifying gangs or demeaning women- great messages and great music. If you like ‘Wavin’Flag’, check out ‘ABCs’ and ‘Dreamer’, too!
