Goodbye yarn extensions
So they lasted just over three weeks. Then I couldn’t stand it anymore, because their foreheads were getting fuzzy.
Sugar actually asked a few days ago to take the yarn extensions out – she wanted “new braids” – but I said “four more sleeps”… with, of course, the devious intention of stretching that to a week since they can never remember how many sleeps anything is.
Alas, four sleeps it was. But for a day’s worth of braiding, that’s not too bad. For a first time doing yarn extensions, and with active three year olds, anyway. Anybody got these things to last a lot longer and still look good? Any tips?
The girls were pretty durn excited when we snipped them off tonight. Some moms may identify with this – Jrock and I thought long and hard before we decided to offer them yarn extensions, because of all the social/cultural/identity implications. Anyway, we decided that they wouldn’t hurt them (like a relaxer or weave – I think that is so wrong for kids!) Our only concern was that they would like the extensions so much, that they wouldn’t want their “real hair” anymore. Especially Spice, because she’s pretty vain and really into hair. But they both surprised us and, as much as they enjoyed them, are ready to get back to their “real hair”… which they agree is softer than yarn anyways.
Enjoy the video… it’s of them getting their “hair” cut off. You get a little more of their talking than I can usually capture on film. It’s pretty amusing.
New nighties

I have started wrapping up my contract from the last two months (which really had me and Jrock hoppin!) so I’m trying to get back into the swing of things. I sewed another nightie the other night, in preparation for summer weather… what I thought was so funny was
1. now I can try the clothes on them instead of on our dog Laughlin and
2. they sure DO look alike in pictures, wearing the same thing with the same hairdo, with the same expression, don’t they?
ANSWER: Spice left, Sugar right
John Mayer Concert
Oh, it is SO nice to get away every once and a while.
My friend T and I bought tickets to the John Mayer concert in Vancouver months ago, and last night we made our pilgrimage. 24 hours with no kids. Heaven!
We ate at small restaurants (I had takoyaki for the first time since I was 15 on exchange in Japan), went shopping at H&M, saw a fantastic concert with Michael Franti and John Mayer (both equally excellent!) and then closed a wine/tapas bar. How much fun is that.
BTW, ever heard of Michael Franti?
Well, you should check him out! He’s a socially concious singer with ultra positive lyrics and a regae/pop/rock vibe.. AND, he just happens to be a “African-American son adopted and raised by Finnish American couple”. Now there’s another role model for us! Listen to him.
Easter bunnies
Right before I left for the concert, my two little Easter bunnies received a package in the mail from Granny and Grandad (Jrock’s parents) with chocolate and pony-egss. Who knew there was such a thing? Anyway, they loved it, so thanks Granny and Grandad!
Then today we got super busy getting ready for Easter. We crafted like crazy!
First they did Easter stickers, colouring and collageing their Easter cards into their journals, then we decorate the Easter eggs. Jrock teased me because I had brown eggs to colour, but they still turned out pretty cool.
They girls also dragged out some ballerina / princess gear, and then we decided they were both going to where their dress-up princess dresses for the Easter egg hunt at the neighbors on Sunday. That should be pretty funny!
