And it’s time for fall activities – hikes, cracking nuts, crunching leaves, making birdfeeders, and getting the most of sunny days before the winter rolls in.
Enjoy the pictures from the last week or so.
- Cracking hazelnuts for homemade cocoa-nutbutter. Yum.
- A kitchen jig.
- Spice and Milk, Sugar and Chocolate on fieldtrip to the library.
- Showing the girls how to throw rocks in the creek.
- Sugar as Godzilla with a backpack.
- Lovely Maggie.
- Laughlin the hiker.
- Making birdfeeders from pinecones found on our hike.
- Sugar and Spice out walking Maggie and Laughlin (not shown) on the Greenway.
- Spice – grinning as usual.
- Sugar – smiling “for Gramma”.

Your girls are so lovely! Thanks for reminding me what our journey is all about! I needed that today!
I see snow on the ground already! It got close to snowing here, but ended up being really big hail, despite it being soooo cold!
Thanks for the great photo update!
Claire
The girls look like they quite enjoy the outdoors!
Nice fall activities! The girls just seem to get cuter and cuter all the time!

What beautiful pictures of two glowing rays of sunshine. Thank you, girls for the smiles. I love seeing the updates as you experience new wonders, grow and change.
Love to the four of you,
Gramma
I remember making birdfeeders out of pinecones!! Great pics…thanks for sharing!

Venessa asked for our nut-butter recipe.
I don’t make it very sweet, but it’s still delicious.
Crack lots of hazelnuts! And then roast them in the oven at 275degrees for 40 minutes. when they are cool, rub them in a towel to get most of the skins off. It’s labour intensive, but it tastes the bitterness off.
Then, all you have to do is grind up your nuts in a food processor. Seriously. After a while the oil releases and you end up with nut butter.
To make it chocolatey, though, you need to add 1 tbl each of cocoa, sugar and oil for every cup of hazelnuts. Mix it really well in the food processor. You may have to add some more oil (canola, walnut, almond, etc.) to get the spreadability.
When done, store IN THE FRIDGE for up to two months. IT will go rancid, so don’t leave it out on the counter.
Enjoy!
The girls are changing already! They are adorable and look so happy. Your post made me feel inspired to make birdfeeders…we have plenty of pinecones in our yard and peanut butter in the cupboard and hamster food, which may work as bird feed.
The girls look so sweet all mitten-ed and cozy!
man we should so make some bird feeders!! we have tones of ponderosa’s in our yard and no shortage of pine cones!
we make pretty much the same hazelnut butter!! only difference is that we use pure maple syrup in lue of sugar…yummy!! super good topped with strawberries!
Have you guys ever gone to H20 down Gordon?
We were just thinking of going there this week, Jenn… We live close by but we haven’t made the time yet.
