We thoroughly enjoyed going into the bush in Ethiopia, but even in the heart of the city you can see an amazing amount of birds. It truly is an amazing place – From fatbirder.com: “In addition to 840 species of birds, of which a staggering 30 are endemic (Africa`s second highest country tally); Ethiopia has a number of peculiar mammals, and a scenic diversity and cultural uniqueness that are hard to equal.” Couldn’t have said it better myself!
Jrock isn’t into birds, but even he was enthralled. And the Rift Valley also showcased other amusing and enthralling animals, such as bush pigs (warthogs), baboons, hippos, monkeys, etc. Enjoy some of our best pictures!
- This dude was huge! and ugly!!!! He looked like he was 5 feet tall…
- A little chicken running with worm in an Addis park.
- Some kind of plover at Lake Langano.
- A fish eagle – Jrock saw these guys hunting quite a few times.
- A “pig!” as the girls called them. Did you know they graze on their knees?
- A lovely family of baboons have an afternoon ant and termite snack.
- The best picture we got of those naughty monkeys – jumping on our roof and throwing stuff at us on hikes.
- This goose’s colouring is so neat.
- Hypos – hard to photograph, especially at dusk. Wish I had taken audio files of their snorting.
- A typical group of pelicans and cormorants.
- Click on him and check out the red eye.
- A heron keeping watch for fish.
- this was one cheeky bird – and a loud sqawker.
- A little songbird on our balcony in Addis. You could hear tons of them every time it rained.

Ethiopian wild life is the gift of nature! Therefore, what is our role towards it? I think so that we all should stand for environmental conservation.
