Dandylion Killer

May. 28th | Posted by 10 comments

Jrock can be pretty obsessive sometimes.  This year, he was all upset because he can’t use his toxic weed killing potions anymore… (city bylaw came into effect) UNTIL I gave him his handy-dandy-lion killer!  It’s a neat but simple device that rips up the offending weeds by the roots.

Our backyard is well aerated now, because of all of his de-weeding… he comes home and then heads out to the yard after work to see if any new ones have reared their ugly heads!

I had to send him back inside, though, when I caught him in his tie and dress shirt the other day.  His tie was dangling in the dirt and he nearly missed stabbing it a few times.

Now there is enthusiasm for yardwork, and their is obsession. Thin line.  I think he had crossed over!

Where did you get that thing?? We have the same bylaw – and while I’ve never really been into the whole toxic chemical thing, our yard is starting to look more yellow than green… Any help would be fantastic!

That is hilarious! He is just like my mother-in-law. We will go to some fancy greek function and come back to their place, and there she will be in her heels, pearls and hair all done, fancy dress, plucking weeds from the garden and muttering about them. She’ll do it for an hour or so, until we tell her to come in and change first!!!

It is a funny sight to see, someone all dressed up doing yardwork!

I want to get one of those but I wasn’t sure if they really worked. What brand is it?

I mixed up my own weed killer with 4 cups vinegar, 1/2 cup salt and 2 tbsp dish soap and it works great but you have to be diligent about putting it on with the spray bottle.

So these contraptions do work then? I’ve been thinking about getting one because I don’t want any chemicals in my garden anymore.

hmmmm… I actually got it at a speciaty garden store. I’m traveling right now, but when I get back I’ll look and see if it has a brand on it.

That said, I know they do sell similar contraptions at Canadian Tire and other stores…

They don’t really work that well because they have started growing back from the roots left behind. GARGH!!! I think I will have to get my 2-4,D out in the middle of the night.

    Persistence pays, honey bunney.

It’s Holland greenhouse brand, for all that wanted to know.. Found one in the garden store here up north today when I ws helping my mom pick out flowers…

I think I will use a combo of the weed puller and my homemade potion on what’s left of the root or for new weeds just starting to poke through. In our garden, I had some really bad weedy patches and I am trying out the wet newspaper paper method. ie. lay down wet newpaper in between your plants and then put compost, soil, wood chips over it. Supposedly the weeds have a hard time growing through the paper and the newspaper breaks down over time. Fingers crossed it works.

Kirsten – I hadn’t heard of that method before… I might have to try it in my berry patch! Because we have such a thriving crop of weeds there :-)
