It’s not our agency

Mar. 22nd | Posted by 3 comments

A series of articles, radio coverage and a special report on the National aired this week, about Ethiopian adoption through the CAFAC agency (we are with Imagine Agency).

We are very concerned.

  1. For the children – if allegations of misdocumenting family ties, a lack of care and physical discipline are true… the children in CAFAC’s care now should be the first concern.
  2. For the Ethiopian adoption program.  The story was very sensational, and it came off as all adoptions are suspect… which they are not.  It didn’t even mention that there is another agency (Imagine) who has passed Ethiopian inspections with flying colours. This kind of negative publicity can get a country’s adoption program closed if the authorities are short-sighted and extrapolate one agency’s problems to all agencies.
  3. For our adoption.  We sincerely hope that we get though court on April 2nd, and everything is finalized, before any permanent negative spillout happens.

For all you kind people who have asked but may not know, FYI:

  • We are with Imagine Adoption agency.  This agency passed the inspections from the Ethiopian government in 2007 with flying colours.
  • All families adopting through Imagine are encouraged to connect with birth families, and Imagine is great about facilitating these visits… providing drivers, etc.
  • Physical punishment is the cultural norm in Ethiopia, but it is not allowed at the Imagine Adoption Agency’s transition homes.  They follow Canadian standards of care.

To all you families adopting with CAFAC and to the many good people who work for them- our thoughts are with you as you navigate through this difficult time.

I hope all will be well and that things are done in an ethical way.
We were with Cafac and I saw nothing that alarmed me when I was in E.
Of course we weren’t allowed to go and look around really, just the waiting room and the court yard. We really really liked Haregewain, she’s tough, and that was needed I think in our situation with A not listening to us..she sure listened to H!!
Praying that your girls will be home soon with you guys!

Well said Nikki. I’ve been thinking about how to post on this and don’t know where to start.
I would also add that Imagine doesn’t pay any of their Ethiopian staff on commission.

Cafac has been facilitating adoptings for ver 11 years ( 15 year ? total) They do a wonderful wonderful service.<This article was meant to be negative & it didn`t matter one whit if they had used CAFAC as an example or another adoption agencies. Negative news sells. If we adopt again we have no hesatation in using CAFAC.

My Husband is in Ethiopia now with the director of CAFAC she & the staff are GEMS – startling news life isn`t perfect in Ethiopia !Or in Canada for that matter.

    cheers
