Murals on my mind

Nov. 16th | Posted by 16 comments

My sister is a great artist – really.  She’s an art teacher with a fine arts degree and a pile of talent.

She’s also done a few baby room murals for different clients, with great results.  I’ll post a few of them up here in a week or so, in case any of you folks in Calgary are interested.  (Her email is silena-ann@shaw.ca and she will travel from Inveremere BC to Calgary to do them, since she can stay with our family there.)

In the meanwhile, just to whet your appetite… she was in class the other day and doodled out the characters for the walls in our girls’ room.  I can’t wait to see the results!

Oh that’s so sweet! She does have skills. I can’t wait to see the end results either. Your girls are going to be blown away when they come home to this dream room, made especially for them!

How fantastic!! Your sister is obviously very talented. Who came up with the characters and concept?

I want a mural for my nursery, but I’m not sure I’ll be in this house for more than a couple more years, so I’ll wait to make one for a little girl’s room instead.

    Lovely.
There is something about those Albertan art teachers – my BF is an art teacher in Peace River and she came out this summer to paint a mural on the walls of my daughter’s play house. She also painted my daughter’s bedroom door a few years ago and we just love it! I’m scared to have her paint the walls because we do plan to move in the next couple of years and I don’t want to be too attached.

I love the frog! Can’t wait to see the finished product…

Nicky, those are lovely!! When we did Mustang’s room I just painted some flowers & vines, a rainbow, a sun… nice enough, but not like your girls’ will have!!
(Does your sister ever travel out east??!!?)

So cute! My favourites are the froggy and the mouse!

Do you remember the song “Froggy Went A Courting” these two characters remind me of that song :)

Some of these are cute (the frog) but some are terrifying! Maybe it’s because I actually have mice in my house and now they’ve taken on a really evil persona! Ohhhhh projection.

Ahhh… it seems the froggy is a real hit :-)

In response to your question, Hazel, I just told her I wanted a “Wind in the Willow” but more modern look. Sort of old English like the rest of our house (we have a Cottswald Cottage.) So she just decided on the characters, and there we go! I’ll post some pics of some of her other finished rooms so you all can have a look.

Oh, and Shauna – she’s a BC art teacher, but, yes! they are wonderful. And we’re planning on staying in this house for 10ish years or until we outgrow it… so I don’t mind committing.

    Cheers
    Nicky

Those are sooo cute (not terrifying). Have fun. Just today I got out a photo from a magazine of a girls room that I have been saving for a very long time because I want to make use of a bunch of ideas. Nothing started yet. It still feels too early.

I just thought of something – what if in Ethiopia these animals (like the mouse or the fox -which could be hyena like) are really scary and/or carry disease? Do you think the kids would have an adverse reaction to them?

I know you mentioned before that you were sending pics of the dogs to the girls so they’ll get used to them, but maybe these will scare them?

  11. Nicky

    That’s a good question, ‘ME’…

anybody else have any experience in this area?

Although I’m not too worried – by the time the animals are picnicking and playing checkers, they should look pretty approachable…

It’s hard to know what may scare the girls, at first, but I am sure they would be delighted to have a beautiful mural on the bedroom wall, painted by Auntie.
We set up the boys’ bedroom before leaving for Ethiopia – so it would be perfect and inviting when they arrived home. My daughter donated her beautiful puppets – an elephant, camel, donkey, goat and emu – to line the top bunk (since no one would be sleeping up there). Selamu walked into his room, took one look at all the animals staring down at him from the top bunk, and ran shrieking into his Ababa’s arms. It took a few weeks before he accepted that stuffed animals/puppets were okay, and now sleeps with the elephant.
He has always loved looking at pictures of animals, though. And loved watching his “Auntie” paint the mural in the playhouse.

Aren’t there murals painted on the walls of the IA TH?

I also wanted to add that my daughter has an eel painted on her bedroom door. When she visits the aquarium she squeals and runs behind my back if she spots an eel in a tank. And although I am sure she would be terrified if she found a live rhino in her playhouse, she is happy to have one painted on the wall ;)

Wow, I can’t wait to see a picture of the finished room (-:

Thanks for the flattery,(and the plug,) sis! I can’t wait to get to work on the room!
I think that the girls may find many things overwhelming and scary at first – just think of their Grandpa and Uncle! But soon they’ll figure out that Dad and Uncle B are just big Teddy Bears and the girls will have them wrapped around their fingers.
Likewise, the room might seem scary at first, but I think that soon enough they’ll love that they have something unique and special- just for them. Of course, what do I know?
Looking forward to seeing you soon and getting to work on it.
