Adoption Timelines

So now that all our paperwork is done, people have been
asking “how long until your kids arrive?”
Long! I hate to say. Here is what Kidslink told us today:
- 1-3 weeks for Ottawa to authenticate our documents (probably just a week to go.)
- 1 week for documents to get to Ethiopia
- 6-9 MONTHS while we wait for a referral
- 2 months for the courts to process the paperwork
- 3-4 months for the kids visa and birth certificates to be issued
- THEN we can travel to pick them up!
So basically, we’re waiting 11-16 months. Let’s just hope the time flies….

Wow, that sure does look like a long wait. I think the referral time wait would be the hardest — our agency’s referral time wait is quite short, but the wait for paperwork/to travel is long enough! Meh… who am I kidding — it’s ALL waiting, no matter how you look at it. But, as people keep reminding me, if you’re pregnant then you have to wait 9 months anyway… Still doesn’t help much though, does it?
I guess the best advice I could give is to keep busy, and don’t dwell on it. Don’t count your days and weeks; just get prepared and keep going forward. If you’re distracted and busy, time flies.
And, in the end, it’s just a speck of time in the lifetime you will have with your children. So it will be totally worth it.
Hi Cinnamon;
Nice yto see you
I think we may be using the same agency – Kidslink?
For one child their referral time is only 1-5 weeks… but for two kids, 6-9 months.
Or are you using CAFAC?

DUDE. I didn’t even THINK about the more-than-one child thing, because here in Ontario, you’re limited to one child under the age of 3.
You’re right. I totally forgot.
Never mind. Nothing to see here. Carry on.
Also? I need to work on the reading-for-details thing. Because you even SAID Kids-Link and I COMPLETELY missed it.
*blush*
Every step is one step closer and not to get your hopes up too high but I do know of one KL couple who got their referral for sibs in much less time than the quoted 6-9 months so here’s hoping. Anyway, I will be very excited to hear that your dossier has landed in Ethiopia.
